 I want to give you an idea of who I am and what I am about. To that end, first I’ll briefly describe the journey that led me to practicing Jyotish professionally. Then, I’ll list the credentials and qualifications I have acquired since I began my journey, as well as a few bits of personal information. I hope you enjoy my story. |
 In Jyotish the Sanskrit word ‘graha’ is used for planet.
Graha translates as ‘that which seizes.’ And that is exactly
what happened to me when I first came across the world of Jyotish. I was
seized with a great desire to learn and eventually practice this ancient
and incredible system of knowledge. Even though this ancient knowledge
tradition is thousands of years old, I knew immediately that it had great
use for today's world and for my own growth. It was late October, 1998, when I had had my first reading with a Vedic
Astrologer. The following month, intrigued with this ancient science,
I attended a symposium of the American
Council of Vedic Astrology in Sedona, AZ. What a treat! It was
amazing! And even though a lot of Sanskrit terms were used that I
had never heard before, it did not feel the least bit foreign. It felt
like a coming home.
Then in early 2002, I began more structured studies with Hart deFouw,
co-author of “Light on Life” and “Light on Relationships”
and founder of the Vedic Vidya Institute in San Rafael, CA. I continue
to study with Hart and will do so for as long as he teaches. He has been
a blessing on this path I have chosen (or better yet, has chosen me);
not only for the incredible knowledge that he imparts but for his ability
to enliven the Vedas, the ancient scriptures of India, in a way that makes
my own life richer and deeper on every level. Jyotish is an oral tradition
that has found the ideal teacher in Hart deFouw and I am one grateful
student! In October, 2004, I decided to take the plunge and take the 1st level
certification exam through the American
College of Vedic Astrology. Having completed the pre-exam qualifications,
I trepidly faced the three hour written exam and one hour oral exam. Much
to my delight I received a score of 99.6%! Time to start a professional
Jyotish practice!

At the end of the conference, there was a banquet and a fundraiser raffle.
Leon Weiner, a gemologist from Santa Fe, had hand carved a likeness of
Ganesha into a small piece of red coral and donated it to the raffle.
Ganesha is the patron of Vedic Astrologers and when I won the carving
in the raffle, I knew this was my omen, I had found my calling!
